Non-surgical periodontal treatments are highly effective in treating periodontal diseases. Although these minimally invasive procedures are quite effective, non-surgical periodontal treatments have their limitations. When periodontal health is not achievable with the help of non-surgical treatments, periodontal surgery may be necessary to help restore periodontal health.
Non-surgical periodontal treatments include:
- Scaling and Root Planing – Scaling and root planing helps to thoroughly clean root surfaces and deep periodontal pockets, using a special tools. This process is often followed with administration of antimicrobials as a form of adjunctive therapy.
After receiving non-surgical treatments, most patients do not require treatment beyond scaling and root planing. However, patients will need on-going periodontal therapy in order to maintain their oral health.
